Cherry Creek/Tuolumne River
The best two-days of whitewater we've found.
Class V Rafting Adventure
Cherry Creek and Tuolumne River combination rafting trips offers arguably the best and most famous whitewater in the world. Begin with an exciting day tackling the Class V rapids of Cherry Creek / Upper Tuolumne, followed by 1-2 days on the Main Tuolumne with 27 miles of Class IV-V rapids. Each day brings challenging paddling and stunning views of remote river canyons. Evenings feature delicious meals and peaceful nights at scenic riverside campsites. Take time to explore the canyon, hike side trails, and cool off in natural granite swimming holes. Led by expert guides, this is an unforgettable way to experience a hidden part of the Yosemite region. Pending water levels trips run from April through August. It’s also possible to just run Cherry Creek/Upper Tuolumne as a day trip.
Flow Window for Cherry Creek and Upper Tuolumne
The steep gradient of Cherry Creek and the Upper Tuolumne creates a narrow window when flows are safe for trips. When the river surpasses 2200 cfs during peak runoff, this section becomes too intense for navigation. Most seasons, high water levels in early June prevent trips, but in high-snowpack years, the runnable window can extend from mid-May through July. For questions about river conditions, check out our Upper Tuolumne River flow information or feel free to contact us. Also, when Cherry Creek is too high the downstream Class IV-V Tuolumne run ends up having spectacularly fun big waves.
Class V Requirements
To join the Class V section, participants must meet certain standards, including:
- Swim back and forth across fast, cold water without being swept downstream (wetsuits, helmets and lifejackets are provided)
- Swimming under the raft
- Paddling with sufficient strength for their body weight (heavier participants need to paddle more forcefully), max weight of 250 lbs)
- Be able to hold their position in the raft through challenging rapids
- Following guide instructions closely
If these standards can’t be met: a trail connects to the river about 1 mile below the launch point. If a guest is unable to continue, they will join the shuttle driver for a walk back to the shuttle vehicle and rejoin the group in the early afternoon below the Class V section.

Trip Overview
The river action kicks off on Cherry Creek, two miles upstream from its confluence with the Tuolumne River. The Class IV Cherry Creek section is a continuation of the land orientation where guides drill paddle teams and run them through swim training. At the confluence is where some people decide on their own they don’t want to go while at times others are told it’s not their day. Below here the river picks up with about 9 miles of continuous Class V whitewater. Its renowned rapids include Jawbone, Mushroom, Miracle Mile, and Flat Rock Falls. With an average gradient of 110 feet per mile, Cherry Creek offers one of the most thrilling rafting experiences in the U.S.

The Boats
Cherry Creek is raft in 15 ft oar/paddle combination rafts with typically two or four paddlers and a guide. The guide uses oars making it easier to control the angle of the raft while the paddlers provide the power to the raft.
After the class V section a gear raft will join the party to take all the food and gear to camp. Sometimes the raft configuration will change at this point depending upon water flows and group dynamics.
Group Size
Trips will have 2 to 5 oar/paddle rafts with no more than 20 guests in the group.
