Tuolumne River Rafting
One of the classic river trips of the west.
Tuolumne River Rafting
Flowing from its source in Yosemite National Park, the Main Tuolumne River is considered one of California’s top whitewater rafting destinations. Known as “The T,” this river delivers continuous action with its steep gradient, creating thrilling rapids like Nemesis, The Squeeze, Gray’s Grindstone, and the famous Clavey Falls, which even has a footpath option. Eighteen miles of roadless seclusion and limited-access permits (only two commercial trips launch each day) allow for a truly wild experience, with side canyons featuring clear swimming pools, short hikes, and glimpses into Gold Rush and Miwok history.
Rapids, Solitude and Scenery
The Main Tuolumne offers an adventure suited to rafters ready for Class IV+ rapids. This stretch kicks off with 6 miles of consistent Class IV challenges. Below the biggest rapid, Class V Clavey Falls, the rivers mellows a bit. For the next 12 miles, the river mixes Class III and IV+ rapids along with calm sections for enjoying the steep untouched canyon scenery until reaching the take-out at Ward’s Ferry.
With no roads and only a few isolated trails along its length, the canyon offers a uniquely secluded view of the Tuolumne, with bobcats, bald eagles, and other wildlife as part of the backdrop. This remote setting is ideal for those looking to escape into nature.
Camping Under the Stars
While some tackle the river in a single day, many choose a two or three-day option, camping at one of the river’s pristine sites for a more immersive experience. Spending the night or two along the Tuolumne is a perfect way to relax, stargaze, and savor the solitude of the canyon.
A National Wild & Scenic River Experience
Designated a National Wild & Scenic River in 1984, the Tuolumne allows only small group sizes (up to 20 people), ensuring an intimate and unspoiled encounter with one of the Sierra Nevada’s hidden gems. Looking for the ultimate Class V rafting experience, consider the Cherry Creek/Tuolumne River rafting option. During late May and early June the Tuolumne River flows get higher and in certain years this section of river becomes Class V for a few weeks. If you have questions, give us a call.
